Solvang the "Sunny Field"

Author: David Sorlie

North of Santa Barbara is the Danish Town of Solvang.
This authentic village, with shopkeepers dressed in costumes to match, is a delight to visit.  The town has a very friendly feel to it.  We spent sometime talking with one of the shopkeepers, and she conveyed to us her strong feeling of pride for the Danish community.

As we explored further, this pride was communicated in how clean they keep the village.  Almost spotless! Without a doubt, this is a shopper’s town.  The distinctive character of each shop we visited added to the charm of this picture perfect village. From Danish specialties to clothing, shoe boutiques, and antique stores, it is all here to satisfy every shopping desire. If lunch time is near, and you have stayed away from the Danish pastries and chocolates, the village has some great food to savor.

The name Solvang is Danish for “Sunny Field.”  Outside the town are attractive apple farms and wineries.  It is well worth your time to take a drive around the countryside.  You will once more see the pride of community on display in this beautiful valley.Santa Ynez, California

The Town of Santa Ynez is located four miles East of Solvang.
The town is small and very charming, and it is good place to start your tour of the wine country.    The Santa Ynez Valley Wine Country has over 70 wineries to explore. From Santa Ynez or Solvang you can start your fun-filled day visiting a variety of wineries around the valley.  Day trips can be arranged at your hotel or a wine tasting room. The tours provide shuttles and a guided tour through the wine country.
As they drive, you can sit back and appreciate the vistas of valleys and mountains and magnificent vineyards.
We hope you find that perfect Pinot noir you have been searching for.

If you prefer to go it alone, tasting rooms are a good way get a list of the Central Coast wineries and maps.We often stay downtown in at the Santa Ynez Inn.
The location is an easy drive to our favorite wineries and within easy walking distance to wine tasting rooms in Santa Ynez.
The inn and the town are our way of stepping back and taking a break from the other tourists.  The wine county during fall season can get to be a bit hectic.  However, if you are fortunate to visit the wine country in the fall, bring your best camera; it is a vista of colors combined with excellent wine tasting.
