Amsterdam is part of the province of North-Holland and is located in the northwest of the Netherlands. A picture perfect small city located on canals with quaint historical buildings but a quiet city with less road traffic because of the canals. The river Amstel terminates in the city center and connects to a large number of canals that restrict the roadways. However, beware of the bike lanes. There may be less car traffic but if you are not familiar with bike lanes; Amsterdam traffic uses the right side of the road -- this includes bikes. Some streets (many in the historic center and along canals) don't have bike lanes at all. Here, they ride with traffic, or stay to the right The bike is the major source of transportation and one sure way to get around the city to see all it has to offer but if you rent one, take the time to read the rules of the road. Before trying you luck at navigating the city it would be prudent to take a canal boat cruise to get a general understanding the geography of the city. The boat cruise is a great way to take in the architecture of the city. It will also help with planning your walking trip around the historic canal ring. Be sure to visit the Waterlooplein Flea market. One of Amsterdam?s oldest and most interesting markets, full of surprises. If you love flowers, the Amsterdam floating market is a must stop. All of the flower stands are on houseboats and they have tulip bulbs to ship home.
