Where to stay in Rome

Author: leonhouses

Rome is an ancient and modern city at the same time, a wonderful set of immortal atmosphere of the Roman Empire together with the modernism required to a big city in 2010. Charm and culture are mixed together with new areas built up in the surroundings of the city centre.

For these reasons Rome attracts every year millions of Italian and foreign tourists who want to breathe the warm atmosphere of this city of art and indeed ancient history. Due to such high demand of tourism, there is a wide choice of modern and well served accommodations near the main historic attractions of Rome or also in the semi-central districts very well served by public transport.

The central area of Rome is quite big but can be covered by choosing the right alleys in no more than 40-50 minutes walks. Anyway it could be convenient for a tourist visiting the city for the first or second time taking some time to consider what would be the best district of Rome to choose the accommodation. Leonhouses Rome Apartments has been operating for several years as tourism web-portal for accommodation in Rome. Based on our experience the main criteria to select the area fitting every genre of requirements are the following ones:

1- If you have planned day trips outside Rome maybe Termini and Esquilino areas could be a good option
2- If you wish to go back to your accommodation by passing via historic central streets then you should look for an holiday apartment, a b&b or an hotel in the main centre: Piazza Navona, Piazza di Spagna, Fontana de Trevi, Campo de Fiori, Piazza Farnese and Piazza Venezia
3- If you want to have the biggest variety of choose in terms of restaurants and typical food in Rome the best districts of the city for different reasons are without any doubt Trastevere or Testaccio
4- If you are trying to find out a low budget and well connected solution cause you prefer to spend money on food and culture instead of accommodation then Aurelio or Prati district might allow to save 20-30% respect to the main Centre.

This having been said we can not hide at all that Rome is an expensive city for accommodation, and hotels, holiday apartments or bed and breakfast are often full. To get good rates in Rome is always better to book in advance respect to look for less probable last minutes especially during the high season . There are plenty of budget hotels in Rome, but you have to consider that the typical price for a standard double room in a central 3 stars hotel in Rome starts approximately at EUR 120 per night; a four-star could be in between EUR 170 and EUR 320. The recommendation is to check very carefully any possible offer very far from this kind of pricing for an hotel in Rome. On the other side if you decide to rent a room in a central Bed and Breakfast in Rome the price for a room with private bathroom should be charged at around EUR 80,00. While a two bedrooms holiday apartment for 4 people should cost 30-35€/night per person.

Choose your best area in Rome

Colosseum - for people who want to live the most ancient side of Rome

The area surrounding the Colosseum and the Roman Forum is full of many roman archaeological sights and the visitor is absorbed by the charm of emperors and ancient Rome. The area is very well connected by public transport to the rest of Rome city centre, Metro Station Line B is located just in front of the Colosseum at walking (20 minutes) distance from Termini Central Station. It's also really easy to reach Via del Corso and the shopping area on the opposite side respect to the Coliseum;

Rome Historic Centre - For Romantics

This area is where it is possible to find out Rome's most beautiful squares and fountains, including Navona Square and the Pantheon. This district of Rome is full of restaurants, pizzerias and bar as well: It is a lovely place to walk at any time of day or night. Campo de Fiori, via del Governo Vecchio and the pantheon are usually very crowded till late in the night in a mix of tourists and Roman people. If you want to have the chance to always go back to your apartment, hotel or b&b on foot this is the district of Rome you must choose.
Metro Line A is not near and the metro stop Spanish Steps is approximately 20-25 minutes walk away from Piazza Navona if taken as reference point. Corso Vittorio Emanuele is the main street serving this area by public transport from Castel S. Angelo and Saint Peter Square till Piazza Venezia.

Piazza di Spagna: For cosmopolitan and trendy people

Via del Corso in Rome can be probably compared to London's Oxford Street in terms of position, shopping and importance. This district (from Spanish Steps up to Piazza del Popolo) is cosmopolitan and charm with exclusive cafes and expensive boutiques. Here is also located one of the most known fountains of the world: Fontana de Trevi.
In terms of connection the area is served from Line A – Stop Spanish Steps only 3 stops from Termini Central Station. Finally the first part of Via del Corso which leads to the Roman Forum and Piazza Venezia is served by many buses.

Termini- Esquilino: For travellers whishing to visit Rome and the surroundings

Termini Central Station is Rome's main hub. There is an express train from Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport (Leonardo Express EUR 15,00 every 15-20 minutes) or buses and shuttles (EUR 8,00) arriving from both Ciampino and Fiumicino Rome Airports. Both metro lines A and B are also located in Termini (soon also Rome Line C will pass here). To stay and rent an apartment (hotels quality here is not so good) in this district of Rome is a convenient solution - mainly if your time in Rome is short or if you wish to catch the first train and take one day to visit Florence, Orvieto, Naples or the surroundings of Rome.
Termini is not a strategic choice, you will not find the charm of the ancient Rome neither the most typical restaurants of the city. This is, however, a district of Rome offering a variety of accommodations, and notwithstanding the majority of the hotels are anonymous (Once again is for sure better to rent an apartment in this area of Rome) , they are used to international tourists and are usually quite efficient. San Lorenzo district at only 5 minutes from Rome could be an alternative, nicer and safer option for people wishing to stay in this area.
