Travel Guide to:
Monterey Pennisula

A pleasant way to drive to the Monterey Peninsula is to take Highway 1 south from San Francisco along the scenic pacific coastline.

Monterey County has some of the most dramatic sightseeing in California and brims with recreation opportunities from the Cypress-forested areas to historical sites and championship golf.

The shoreline along Monterey Bay is a National Marine Sanctuary.  At the center of the Sanctuary is an underwater canyon that is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon.  You can explore the wonders of this Sanctuary up close by taking a boat tour or kayaking.  Whale watching tours are popular during December through March and will give you another up close experience of the Sanctuary as the whales make their annual appearance.

If you want to learn more about the bay, visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium in the scenic historic town of Monterey.  The aquarium is located in Cannery Row.  The area was once a canning factory.  Now it is home to fine shops, restaurants, art galleries, and hotels.  It is also the host of the annual Monterey Jazz Festival.

Del Monte Forest

At the tip of Monterey bay is Del Monte Forest, the home of the famous Pebble Beach Golf Club. You can reach this area just outside of the town of Monterey by driving the 17-mile drive through the Del Monte Forest. Monterey pines and a variety of rare and endangered plant species dominate the forest. The Del Monte Forest Foundation, along with the Monterey County and the California Costal Commission, manage and maintain this pristine area.

If you start the drive at the Pacific Grove Gate, you will you drive along the coastal side of the loop.  Take a moment to stop along the way at Point Joe and watch the offshore waves crashing together from two directions.  These turbulent waters caused many early mariners to crash onto the rocks at Point Joe.  The Point is now a tee box for a par three hole on the Monterey Peninsula Golf Club.

A combination of a turbulent sea and a good golf swing are sight to behold.  All of the golf courses within the Del Monte Forest are surrounded by this natural, spectacular beauty—like this classic seaside fairway at Pebble Beach.
