Welcome to Carmel-By-The-Sea

Travel Guide to:
Carmel

Carmel-By-The-Sea is a small town located on the Monterey Peninsula about 2 hours south of San Francisco or 5 hours north of Los Angeles. Driving into the town on Ocean Avenue, you are greeted by shops, galleries, restaurants, and native Cypress trees in this storybook village.  The cottages reflect the bohemian style of the town that is a haven for artists, writers, musicians, and actors.  The galleries exhibit original works by well-established artists.

The village is one square mile, so everything is within walking distance.  The walk will take you through courtyards, shops, and gardens.
As you explore the town, you will notice how pet friendly Carmel is.  Pets are welcome everywhere, from hotels to shops.

If you need to take a break after your tour, try Carmelita Park.  It is across from the post office. The entrance is a little hidden, but once inside the inner city park, you will find it a pleasing place to relax.  There is a variety of rare flora that can be found in the park as you escape from a busy day of sightseeing.

A walk on Carmel beach’s white sand and turquoise blue waters are another great way to escape.

Point Lobos State Reserve

Three miles south of Carmel is Point Lobos State Reserve.  This is a must see if you like thundering surf and the natural beauty of the forest.  The land and sea are a photographer’s dream, but the ocean is a diver’s dream.  They say you only see half the Reserve unless you are a diver.

A short way off shore, there is a precipitous drop giving a tidal effect, delivering high levels of oxygen into the water.  The result of this is an unusual collection of plant and animal life in this unique marine sanctuary.

There are a number of hiking trails and picnic areas.  Take the time to see the 200-year-old Cypress trees as you hike the trails walked by Robert Louis Stevenson and John Steinbeck.  If you prefer, you can just sit by the ocean and watch sea otters lay on their backs, wrapped in kelp to keep them from sinking as they nap.
